The Great Wall is one of the wonders of the world, but the mountains north of Beijing through which the wall passes are very scenic in their own right. The picture above, scanned from a slide taken in 1987, shows a part of the wall and the mountains.
Back in 1987 foreign visitors to the wall were still relatively rare. Almost all of the people shown are Chinese, most of whom were on group tours. The umbrellas were set up by vendors selling snacks or souvenirs.

The mountains dwarf the wall, God’s work is always so much greater than ours. I love the colorful vendor umbrellas, had no idea about that! I bet the wall is a prime location for money making. I know I would buy something, just to say that I bought it on the Great Wall.

When this is enlarged, the people especially look almost like a watercolor…and I love it.

Did you know that The Great Wall of China is not a continuous strip of wall? This is a collection of walls continues along the hills to the south end of the plains of Mongolia. 221-206 was built in BEC mud and rocks, supported by wooden frames to prevent the nomads of Mongolia to enter the Chinese territory.
