Watery Wednesday #139: Bull Sluice

"I wonder if it's too late to change my mind?" Bull Sluice on the Chattooga River. April 30, 2011.

This is my post for Watery Wednesday.  To see more of our beautiful watery world, or to join and post your own pictures to share, click HERE.

On our way to the beach Betsy and I stopped by Bull Sluice on the Chattooga River.  Bull Sluice is a Class V whitewater rapid, and we saw several kayakers shoot the rapid while we were at the observation deck.

I was fortunate to be able to read the mind of this kayaker as he went through the rapids.

"So far, so good!"

"I think I'm going to get wet!!!"

"Oops!!"

What happened?  If you look at the tip of the arrow in the last picture, you can almost see the end of his paddle.

Great pictures! I cannot imagine doing this!!!

  2. Karin Says:

I can’t imagine doing this or even watching this! Definitely don’t have the skills to mind-read, lol! That is certainly a watery Wednesday for that courageously crazy – in good way – person! Such risk takers out there, lol! Great shots!

A great series of shots. I hope he got through okay.

  4. Rose Says:

I would never have the nerve! Not even sure I would like watching….

Great post! I think you read his mind exacly 🙂 They are very brave (or stupid 😉 to dear to make this in a wild river, but it looks cool though 🙂

My first reaction is to laugh!! Then I looked for the tip of the paddle then I decided it’s better to observe and take photos. Don’t have the power to do this thing, lol!!

All I can say is that I would rather be standing on the observation deck, than being in the water.

  11. Happyone Says:

Oh my goodness. I don’t think that is for me. I’d better stick to my morning walks!!

  12. Ginny Hartzler Says:

Yes, you have finally perfected your mind reading talents!! I CANNOT believe these pictures! What was he thinking? Has the whole world gone mad? I was just reading an article in the paper, it was a review of the new Evel Kenievel boigraphy. I guess I am on the complete opposite end of the spectrum! You got some amazing shots! So were you able to see him till the end and did he make it?

  13. Linnea Says:

Wow! I always wanted to do that but I think class V is a bit too powerful for me…hope he came back up again (I’m sure he did and he enjoyed every second of it…!)

Been there, done that, never again! Not quite as ferocious as that river, but done just near Atlanta, GA. I was not popular with the guys, all the “goodies” in the kayak were LOST!
Still it was a warm day, and I had an unintended bath with my clothes on – ha ha! Haven’t tried the bath routine with clothes on since either. You look pretty stupid pinned to dry from a tree branch!
I have watched the kayakers here in Australia in action, and thought they were hell bent on killing themselves, then I recalled Atlanta and that river!
That made me change my tune – as long as you are a good swimmer and don’t panic, you will only get bruising, maybe a broken part, lose some dignity, BUT thats life!
Great post George, thanks for the memory or nightmare!
    Cheers
    Colin (HB)
