Betsy and I drove through Big Thompson Canyon on a September morning in 2012 on our way from Fort Collins, Colorado, to Rocky Mountain National Park.  The canyon was formed by the Big Thompson River, which flowed along the road for much of our trip.  The boulders and rushing water were fascinating.

At one point we came upon a small herd of pronghorn sheep.  Some were right along the highway, but one kept watch from the top of the canyon wall.

The sky was just as fascinating as the rocky canyon walls themselves.  It was a beautiful ride.

Wow—what marvelous pictures.. Love your colors. They are SO vivid… WOW!!! Loved driving in that canyon. BUT–I do wonder what happened to that area after the terrible flood a few years ago… Bet it came back even more beautiful!

We made the drive up Big Thompson Canyon a few years ago (before the flood) and thought it was pretty special.

The colors are outstanding. The damage is slowing recovering. Some of it will always alter the landscape. Still it is a beautiful place.

A beautiful place. Wonder how it looks since the flood. We were in Estes Park during the flood. Not a vacation event we would recommend. Luckily, we were in a safe place that did not need to evacuate, but we had to drive west over the mountains and then north into WY to come east and return home. We plan to go back this fall to Estes Park. Already have the reservations made. It looked destructive happening especially to see homes washed out, but that is the force that has carved the canyon. Your photos are beautiful.
