Betsy and I really enjoy our visits to Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  For the past few years we’ve been going in both May and early December.  (We can’t stay away from that delicious Calabash seafood for too long!)

Although the weather is usually warmer in May, we enjoy our December visits because we get a good view of the sunrise from the balcony of our room at the Islander Inn, as you can see from the photo above.

So, although we are on vacation, both Betsy and I make an attempt to get up each morning at sunrise.

On some mornings there is a thick bank of clouds on the horizon,

although patches of blue were often soon seen in other parts of the sky.

Some mornings all we could do was stand in awe at the beauty of God’s creation.

Another Experiment

I’ve been experimenting again.  I’ve used Photoshop to horizontally stitch together pictures to make panoramas, but I had never tried to stitch pictures vertically.

When Betsy and I visited Dry Falls on our way home from our anniversary celebration, I captured three pictures of different parts of the the waterfall which I later stitched together to get the image above.  I think the result gives a good view of Dry Falls.

Down Memory Lane: Pisgah Forest (July, 2009)

2009 -- Pisgah Forest

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

In July, 2009, Betsy and I met my son Robert and his family in the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, North Carolina.  We did some hiking in the Pink Beds and had a wonderful picnic lunch.

After lunch the young people (my son inclued) decided that they would like to check out Sliding Rock, a popular summer destination in the western North Carolina mountains.  As the name implies, Sliding Rock is a water slide down a smooth rock face.  Betsy and I volunteered to be the official photographers, so we had to miss out on the fun.

In the collage above, Sliding Rock is shown at the top left.  Robert, Sean and Zack are waiting their turn to slide down the rock (Sean looks a little unsure about what he’s gotten himself into).  The top right shows Robert and Sean going down the slide.

The bottom left photo was taken on the Blue Ridge Parkway later in the day, while another picture of Robert and Sean is on the bottom right.

Grandfather Mountain

February 16, 2016

In November, 2012, Betsy and I spent a couple of days in the mountains of eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina.  One of the places we visited was Grandfather Mountain, not too far from Blowing Rock, North Carolina.

The day we visited Grandfather Mountain was beautiful, but cold.  The cold didn’t bother us too much as we started up the mountain, stopping at the Sphinx, Split Rock and the Wildlife Habitat on the way.  But by the time we reached the Mile High Swinging Bridge at the top, the wind was really blowing and it was cold, COLD, COLD!  The weather had been mlld previously, so we weren’t prepared for the cold.

We made it across the bridge nevertheless, although for some reason there weren’t a lot of people around.  After thawing out in the Visitor Center at the top, we headed back down the mountain for some warmer temperatures.

This slide show contains images taken that day during our visit to Grandfather Mountain.  We’ve been back since, but the weather was milder at that time.

Skywatch Friday: Beach Skies

This is my post for Skywatch Friday, a meme for sharing views of the sky from all over the world.  To see more, or to join and share your own photos of the sky, click HERE.

There is, to me, something special about the sky and the ocean together.  It may be that the ocean magnifies the beauty of the sky.  White clouds in a beautiful sky above the sea reminds of the glories of God’s creation.

Betsy and I have had annual passes to Biltmore House and Gardens for several years now.  We get over there several times a year to enjoy the gardens and the grounds of the estate.  But we almost always stop at the Conservatory to visit the Orchid Room as well.

We don’t grow orchids — I’m not sure we could be successful at it — but we certainly enjoy the beauty and variety of the orchids being grown at Biltmore.

Just when it seems we’ve seen just about every possible color and pattern, we turn a corner and see something else which is simply spectacular.

February is a good month for visiting waterfalls, and since the weather is usually mild (at least in this part of the country) it’s also a good month for hiking.

These pictures are from my archives.  In February, 2008, Betsy and I visited several waterfalls in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina.  Setrock Creek Falls in Yancey County, North Carolina, was one of those waterfalls.

We actually went to the area to visit another waterfall, but when we found the trailhead to Setrock Creek Falls, we couldn’t resist the temptation to make the hike to the falls.

Down Memory Lane: Mountain Air in 2009

2009 -- Mountain Air

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

In July, 2009, Betsy and I went to Mountain Air, near Burnsville, North Carolina, to visit my son Robert and his family.  Robert and Melissa were staying at a condo owned by Melissa’s parents, and they invited us to visit them there.

Mountain Air is a development built around a country club and get’s its name from the mountaintop airstrip that allows people to fly in to visit.  Robert and Mel  — as well as Betsy and I — didn’t fly in, but got there by car.

There are awesome views from many places in Mountain Air, as well as some beautiful homes.  We thoroughly enjoyed the tour given by Robert and Mel — as well as Zack and Sean.

The collage above shows views of the sky we enjoyed on our first evening in Mountain Air.  The picture on the left in the second row shows a view of the mountains on the morning of our second day.  The picture in the middle shows me with Robert.  The picture on the bottom right shows our hosts, Melissa, Robert, Zack and Sean.

One of the nicest things about traveling with my Beautiful Bride is that I get to watch Betsy the Photographer at work.  That was the case when we visited the Rose Garden at Biltmore House and Gardens last month.

Betsy takes her photography very seriously — perhaps more seriously than I do.

In late June Betsy and I traveled to North Carolina to meet my son Robert and his family.  We took advantage of the opportunity to drive along one of our favorite roads, the Blue Ridge Parkway.

We picked up the Parkway in Asheville, North Carolina, and headed north.  We stopped at the Tanbark Ridge Overlook to enjoy the view.

The mountains and the sky were both beautiful, and I tried to capture that beauty as best as I could in this panoramic shot.
